PRESS RELEASE – Writer in Residence 2017 Elizabeth George
New York Times Bestselling Author, Elizabeth George, is the Writer in Residence for Minerva Education’s 10-day seminar in Tuscany, Italy in summer 2017
Tempe, AZ (April 1, 2016) – Minerva Education welcomes Elizabeth George as its fourth writer in residence. An award-winning author and educator, George will spend ten days in Tuscany with a small group of workshop participants, giving lectures and feedback on participants’ writing with a focus on “Process and the Novel.” The residency will run from May 22-May 31, 2017 in Castellina in Chianti.
In an interview with The Writer, George describes the importance of learning the craft of writing:
“It’s important for beginning writers to learn the craft, the basics, of writing. You can’t teach somebody to be a creative artist, to have talent or passion, but you can teach somebody craft. Whether they can apply it in an artistic fashion, well, that’s in the hands of the gods. But they can certainly learn what the craft of writing is.”
Elizabeth George is the New York Times and internationally best selling author of twenty British crime novels featuring Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley and his unconventional partner Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers. Her crime novels have been translated into 30 languages and featured on television by the BBC. She is also the author of a young adult series set on the island where she lives in the state of Washington.
A longtime instructor of creative writing, she has taught at colleges, universities, writers' retreats, and conferences internationally. She most recently taught a live online creative writing class for Hedgebrook Women's Writers' Retreat on Whidbey Island. She is the recipient of the Anthony Award, the Agatha Award, France's Grand Prix di Literatture Policiere, and Germany's MIMI. She has twice been nominated for an Edgar Award, and she is the recipient of an honorary doctorate of humane letters from California State University Fullerton, and an honorary MFA from Northwest Institute of Language Arts (Whidbey Island MFA Program).
She has also written the longtime best selling creative writing book Write Away, has edited two volumes of short story, and is the executive chair of the Elizabeth George Foundation, which makes grants to poets, emerging playwrights, and unpublished novelists.

About the Writer in Residence Program
Minerva Education’s Writer in Residence program offers writers an opportunity to spend ten days in Tuscany, Italy to mentor and work with a small group of workshop participants in honing their writing projects and fine-tuning their craft. The residency provides a space for authors to work privately, one-on-one, and in a group with workshop participants.
Minerva Education was founded in Tempe, Arizona in 2013 as an innovative and exciting workshop opportunity to allow beginning and mid-level writers access to the experience and mentorship of more seasoned writers. Today Minerva Education is continuing to build on prior successes, attracting internationally renowned authors to its residency program and talented workshop participants, many of whom have since gone on to publish and launch their own writing careers.
